History - Archaeological Sites

The island was probably inhabitated in the neolithic period. Its ancient name was Peparithos and it refers to the Minoans who settled in the Aegean around the years 2800-2000 b.C. The name Skopelos appeared for the first time in texts which Ptolemeos wrote in th Z' centuary A.D. and is probably due to the many shoals that are around the island.

Around the year 1600 b.C. the island is inhabited by the Minoans with the mythical prince Stafylos the son of Theseys and Ariadnes.
